Strengths And Weakenesses Of My Magazine Cover
Strengths and Weaknesses.
There are many strengths and weaknesses to the magazine cover I have attempted to create, the magazines ambition is to achieve a conventional school or college magazine issue with an accompanying content page. I believe that i have managed to do this relatively successfully, and example of my success is that i have incorporated many conventional cover features one of which being the colour scheme, for the colour scheme i have used only 3-4 colours. This is very stereotypical and conventional of magazine covers to choose no more than four main colours and continue this scheme thought the magazine. For my cover i managed to stick to this convention as i only incorporated three colours for the fonts and background of the image; these being Grey, white and mustard yellow. Sticking to this convention allows my overall magazine cover and contents appear more professional and legitimate, in addition it shows a clear link between the cover and contents ( an overall theme is carried out due to the linking fonts, layout and colours).
Besides this being successful i have also not included many conventional features of a magazine such as bar codes as i personally did not feel that the magazine needed one due to the target audience/ specification of the magazine intended for college students and free of charge therefore, to me this was a pointless addition to the magazine itself and not crustal to a free edition.
Due to my magazine covers target audience being fashion students i researched existing fashion magazines such a VOUGE and many others, by doing this i was able to pick out the re occurring conventions. I then took these and adapted them to fit the specification of a school/ college magazine, an example of where i have done this is by using my model and creating the persona of her being famous, this is an extremely strong technique that magazine companies use to capture the audiences eye and make them want to read the magazine, these are called celebrity endorsements. To accompany this one of the main articles i've advertised is an interview with the model / 'celebrity'. A disadvantage of how i have done this is as i have not made the article advertisement larger to stand out against the other smaller less important article headings. Next time to improve this i would enlarge the text and in addition to this i would highlight the models name to indicate importance and promote the recognition of my model to help sell the magazine.
As well as not making text large enough for some of the headings my spelling and punctuation is incorrect, this makes the magazine cover appear less professional and does not promote the college in a good light. To improve the magazine cover i will go back and correct the spelling and punctuation.
A strength of my individual articles is that they use some literal techniques to make them more catchy this is a convention of many magazine covers, an example of this would be '26 Steps To Success' by using alliteration this makes the title flow and catchy. Despite this advantage i feel as though in comparison to the conventional magazine mine lacks small article titles to advertise the contents therefore next time i could include more.
Much like my previous point on my contents page due tot he layout i have used to try fit the conventions of highly established magazines i was unable to include feather contents on the page which is very un conventional as most magazines will list all contents on this page and highlight the main articles so that they are easily located by the readers. Saying this an advantage of my contents page is that is is evidently tabled and can not be mistaken as anything but a content page, with the addition of a editors note to make the whole magazine feel more authentic and professional.
As a whole currently i feel that the magazine i have produced has been successful to an extent as it coveys many features that are crustal to a magazine cover and content page ( coulums on the content page, dates, structured text and many more) because of this i feel that my magazine as a whole is relatively conventional however incorporates more modern aspects than a traditional magazine to appeal to the target audience of a fashion student which tend to be more up to date with latest trends and 'test the limits of style and fashion and also find pleasure is new designs that are un conventional).
